Senior Girl

Kacey (my oldest) finally got her braces off and we were able to do her drape photo for the yearbook. Anything I should change before submitting? This was taking in my garage with natural light and a bit of fill flash - white reflect below her.

Look what I found...

...in my back yard. It's an animal, right? (it's certainly BIG enuf to qualify!)

My Grandmother's Hands

I took my camera with me today when I went to visit my grandmother. I've been wanting to take this picture for a long time, but she's a tough one to get to agree. Fortunately, today she was in a good mood. I think that seeing the photo actually made me "see" the years in her hands more than I had before. I'm sorry I didn't make a note of the settings.

I'm finished...

...with the football program...YEA!
Now I must go clean house, so here's an old one.

first try at gels

I bought a bag of gels at a garage sale. So I played a little this morning. Hair light 8.0 main 8.0 fill 5.6. And the back light I just did several shots to see what would happen at different lights. These are turned all the way up so they are super saturated. Wow all of these on the same background. This may be my NEW addiction!!! LOL and will save space in my studio too.

Pet pig.....?

Okay, there's a story here. My dh works for a company that does work at the college I'm attending. So he was there today changing 1000 watt (yes 1000 watt ) bulbs in the parking lot. They take the blown bulbs down and draw faces on them. (oh, did I mention they were working. lol) They said they look like pigs? Anyway. This is sooc. Dragged the shutter to get it exposed correctly. It was such a bright day and the bulb being white, the camera meter wanted to underexpose the bulb. And what I like is the apeture was at 5.6, I focused on the eyes and the nose is oof, but the mouth and eyes are in focus. That's the apeture at work for you! settings. ISO 200, SS 1/500 f/5.6.

TIPS

Okay Ladies, You might not want this info, but I'll share for those who do. These are notes that I took as I read through the ILP forum on dragging the shutter.

Dragging the Shutter (basically, using a lower shutter speed in a low light situation in order to balance the ambient background light to your flash output)

You Want to ignore camera meter and let the flash do the work:

high ISO (400-600)
slow SS 1/40 or less
AP begin around 4.0
WB: Auto
Bounce the flash if possible, adjust flash output as needed (this can be done on the flash or
with the camera's flash EV - or as you learn more, by opening up the Aperture

FACTS:
1. Aperture controls the light output from the flash
Shutter speed controls the amount of ambient light

2. If you want more flash power you'd use a smaller aperature. BUT smaller aperture means a stronger flash so you'll have a longer recharge time for the flash to fire again (so try adjusting the flash output on the flash or in camera first)

Another setting for nighttime interior - posted by MLK

ISO 400
F 4.0
SS 1/30
bounce flash if possible

note: the dark room will make the pupils of a person really large, so take a couple of consecutive shots so that the flash reduces them

Hope this helps, Cindy

I'm here I'm here

I had a session on Monday and I'm frantically trying to finish proofing cause I have another session on Sat. Since we can use sessions, here are three. One for Monday, Tues. and Wed.

I am lost...

candle light

Okay, still working on the ss/ambient light/dragging, etc. I had to play with the settings a lot to get this one so I could see the flame, not blow it out and get reasonable background light. It was completely dark in the room, I forgot to raise my ISO (hey, you know me and those ISO issues). So, my settings are ISO 100, ss 1/10 and f14. I'm trying to keep in mind the top in the forum: SS affects background light and the AP affects the flash.

Favorite from today...

....yeah I know it's not a shutter drag photo but it's all I got (so there:)
ISO 200, ss1000, f5

I'm here Ruth....

...just haven't had a chance to even read the ILP thread yet...SORRY!
I was asked to do the photography for the High School Football program and of course they want it done yesterday....football, band and cheerleaders - just some action shots...up close...so you can see their faces...Varsity and JV - no biggie!!!

I am now in the process of proofing 432 pics and I haven't even done the girls yet (one of the joys of digital is that you can take SO many photos....geez!!!).

Anyway, I just wanted to let everyone know (or at least those willing to read this far:) what next weeks theme will be. Lets take the 'In your own backyard' idea and add shallow DOF to it. So we'll be doing a backyard DOF shot.....OK?

And I will say that I am having a hard time coming up with other additions to my original themes so would it be out of line to ask everyone to contribute one theme....since I really don't know what I'm doing here and would appreciate some help? Or maybe one of you (hint, hint, Ruth) could do this first set instead of the moron (that would be me:). Let me know!!!

sorry no post

sorry guys but I had a session last night from the time I got home from work until 10pm. I'll post a photo from that session tonight.....
AND I promise to do a shutter drag.

So????????????? where is my posse?????????

Trying for Distance

Okay, settings are listed on image. I tried to bounce inside, but my ceiling in this room was just too high, so I shot straight on with Omnibounce, I still have pinlights in her eyes.
I wanted to know about how far from a subject I could get and still have it work, so out to the back yard we went. As you can see, the DOF for light falls off drastically behind her and she has RED EYES!

Sunday, August 5, 2007

my first shutter drag

ok I totally don't get it. But with practice maybe I'll understand. The article says iso400 f4.0 ss30 No way did that work for me. so I had to play with stuff, with my iso 1000 it is really grainy and I don't like it. Also, you can see the pin flash in his eyes. How do you get rid of that?

Oh...and it came out really warm...even on the flash mode and on AWB. wassup with that? Yup, this is going to take some practice. Cindy I noticed you took it at f8.0. I got all kinds of ghost at 2.8 when he moved.

Dragging the Shutter

Okay, my house is VERY well lit from window light - so I shut all doors to my room and threw a blanket over the window because I couldn't wait until dark to give this a try. Now, I see that the focus isn't sharp. I do need a touch more flash on her (this is SOOC). I raised my ISO to 400, lowered the shutter speed to 1" and ended up with AP at 8 to keep from getting a ghosting effect. Once the flash fired, she left the scene - so as you see, it works. Now, to get willing subjects!!!

OK my pic for Saturday (even though it's Sun morning)

Ok, we went to the demolition derby last night and we let a friend borrow our trailer so they could get their derby car to and from the derby. Well, since we let them borrow the trailer they wrote my url for my website on the side of it for everyone to see!! This was taken with my P&S camera, so no settings for this post!

Saturday, August 4, 2007

ok I've been thinking and have heard back from a few. Jen??? did you not get the email cause I didn't hear from you! I'm really sorry if you didn't. But here goes.... All still want to be in the blog, all of us have good intentions....summer is BUSY BUSY BUSY. And we are photographers on top of that.

I agree with what everyone has said.

1. Make the themes meaningful
2. allow for our business to grow and feel overwhelmed
3. have fun with it and not make it a chore

so............. this is what I'm thinking. We started this blog for us to grow individually, so if you want to grow you have to push yourself. But there are gunna be days that you JUST CAN'T.

so, lets keep with the themes but lets' look for ways to make it meaningful. For example. If the theme is red.... (good one) also add a twist... dof, long exposure, flash, ps it, and we can repeat those things over and over because it is good for us.

So for next week. (starting tomorrow) and this is a biggy....please read.

http://ilovephotography.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=215560&st=195

...at ILP and lets do it. You just need complete darkness. I think you will all be very surprised at what you'll find out. I'm gunna have to re read it for me to understand as well. But the premise is, your flash freezes the action and your camera lets in the light. You can make a completely dark room look like daylight. It is called dragging the shutter. You set your shutter really slow but the flash stopped the action so you could totally walk out of the frame while the shutter is still open and you photo will be tack sharp. Best to ready it.

So Meg, could you redo your themes?? Using the ones you did and put something else with it. Life DOF for the whole week....or flash for the whole week.

sorry for being so long winded. Man, I'm tired now!! LOL

Let's Talk Themes

Okay, I confess, I'm a slacker. There are days when I don't pick up my camera (hanging head in shame). Then there are others where I do a shoot, but don't take the time to photograph the "theme" item for the week.

Here's what I'd like to see come of this blog:

I'm in this to learn. I'd love for us to try new techniques/skills that others have displayed and done with success. For example, easy ones would be depth of field, stopping and blurring motions, etc. More complicated might be shooting with one light, shooting with two lights, bouncing flash off a poster board to the side of your subject, etc.

I know that it seems every time I shoot I learn something, so it would be great that as we take on these techniques, we also post lessons learned. For example, the 10 second shutter speed just doesn't work on a sunny day, no matter what filter I used!

I think Lindy's idea of posting an image from a client shoot on those days is also acceptable. Especially if you are posting the exif data and maybe telling about how you set up the shot. I've learned a lot just reading comments made on images on the ILP and Shuttermom forums.

Just my 2cents!

Themes

OK, I was asked by Ruth to come up with some themes for the next couple of weeks and since no one objected (you snooze you lose) here's what I have come up with (and I couldn't find a list so I made up my own)

Week of Aug. 5th.....Flash - as per Ruths suggestion (I will let her explain the parameters because I'm not sure what they are:)

week of Aug. 12th....In your own backyard (pretty much anything in your yard or garden)

week of Aug. 19th...Red

week of Aug. 26th...Pets/animals

week of Sept. 2nd...Everyday objects (seen in a different or interesting way)

week of Sept. 9th...windows

I am only picking 6 so more people will have a chance to participate in choosing themes (and because I can't think of anything else!)

Did I do this correctly Ruth???
