wow Meg!!! I can't believe how far you've come in such a short time! You need to teach ME! This is awesome and the color is great too.

how do you figure out what settings to use. etc. for example iso?

Well, it was pretty cloudy so I needed to bump the ISO up a bit to get the shutter speed high enuf to stop the action. I also like to have a bit of DOF so both players and in this case the ump, will all be in focus. Then it's just trial and error to see what combo works best. I usually shoot in manual, but with clouds causing such uneven lighting conditions, I had it set to aperture priority. With baseball I also tend to set the focus to one-shot and lock onto the base I think will see the action. I knew there would probably be a play at home so I was aiming toward the plate. When I am trying for an action shot, of say the shortstop, then I go with ALservo and just kind of follow that player around the field. It's a lot of guesswork and a bit of luck (and it doesn't hurt to have a baseball coach at home to give me tips:)

GREAT Capture! Do you have a 300mm lens yet?

Maureen said...

No, but it's on my list...of course I would have to win the lottery to pay for it...but it's on the list :)

Sorry Ruth, I made a mistake in calculations and deleted the comment. I usually shoot day games at 5.6 to 6.4, and most night games I have to open it up to 2.8; high school baseball fields are not well lit. At 6.4, I should have about 11 ft of focus to home plate vs. 5 ft. if I set it at 2.8. I have so many focus issues with this lens that I only shoot wide open when I have to, and I get way less keepers. I love the bokah of a lower f-stop but I can't take the chance of not getting the shot.

What lens do you use for these? I have a 75-300mm and everything comes out blurry during softball practice.

Hi Kelly, its a 70-200 and I've gotten my share of blurry shots...what ss are you using and what kind of focus?
